Oh, The Dreaded Flat Spell...

As surfers, we all deal with the highs and lows of the ocean. When the waves are pumping, it becomes who we are and engulfs our daily lives. Not much else really matters and hitting the surf is always the priority, it’s just figuring out how to shut down life around you to get every last touch of swell and take full advantage.
As we know all too well, when the swell is gone, we have to become normal civilians again and acclimate back into society. We also never know when we will see the next swell. Sometimes it takes way too long and you feel like you are losing touch with your identity.
Here is FL this happens every summer, as it does in many places. The treat for us is the hurricane swells, which can take us from lake conditions to maxing out in a hurry. These are always a welcome treat when the storms take a track offshore and the winds work in our favor. This past summer wasn’t the best, we had our days, but it wasn’t all time.
On the flipside, I know CA was suffering as well, so there was no summertime envy watching the other coast. We had a great October and the waves never seemed to end, but then they did. November has been a bust. There has been a few days to surf, but either blown out or ankle biters. This isn’t typical for us and November usually produces pretty well.
So, the summertime blues are back and it has been weeks without any substantial surf. CA looks good again and the envy has kicked in. Time to travel a bit and find some waves. There is hope, as winter is showing it’s face and it is typically a great time of year for swell, lets just hope it all lines up this year and makes up for the dismal summer and fall.
I am turning civilian and I am crawling in my skin to break away from the mold and going back to the society I know and love best. As surfers, we all know our little bubble is the greatest place to be, but when the waves go flat, it is a hard nose dive into the real world.
Pray for surf, our souls depend on it!!!
